View Full Version : DNR Volunteer Training

I attended this class today along with Ted. I have several packets of information to share at our next meeting.
Here are a few points that I noted...
1. We need to make sure everyone has filled out and signed a "Volunteer Registration and Agreement" in order for their hours to count towards possible grants as well as DNR pays L&I for our time in case of injuries. This is even if they fill out the Group Time Sheet.
2. DNR pays for L&I coverage for their volunteers hours and will cover you if injured while helping DNR with volunteer tasks asked of us. Any injury no matter how small should be immediately reported to David Way. DNR only has a 72hr window to report injuries to L&I after which you will have no coverage for a injury reported late.
3. RTW can have pre filled out Group Time Sheets with members names and info so that the members present at work parties only need to sign and print their hours. The names of those who don't attend can be marked as 0 hrs.
4. When filling out Time Sheets we need to make sure to keep E&E (Education & Enforcement) hours seperately listed as TM (Trail Maintenance) as DNR needs to track each for possible grants.
5. We need to have a record of all RTW members who are currently certified in First Aid & CPR. It would be helpful also to know who has first aid kits with them at work parties.
6. I have a DNR "Adopt-A-Site Agreement" that I think RTW should fill out to make their commitment official to DNR. There are items listed that we are required to do as well as DNR's responsibilities to us.
Crash, is there any more space on the server for me to upload pdf's of these other forms I have. My attachment allotment appears to be almost full for the site.
More to follow....

7. Forest Watch. Christine Redmond the Volunteer Program and Grant Coordinator for DNR who gave this class said she is contacting David Monday regarding coming up and getting the Forest Watch program started. She has to do the training and get it setup with David but it is coming. I have a pdf to upload that shows the requirements and responsibilities.
8. She also said she would be happy to come up and teach the class I attended to the rest of our group if we would like.

Proper PPE "Personal Protective Equipment" that should be used for trail work with different tools. With the amount of trail work we will need to help with, this can be very important since injuries are reported to L&I through DNR. They will get in alot of trouble if we are not using the proper safety gear and are not trained to use the tools.

Is there any interest in a RTW training meeting? The volunteer training that will be offered like the one I attended only touched on some things. I have more training materials now including DVD's that were recommended at this training.

Don't you think it's odd that it's been a week and only 3 people have even responded in this thread?
Yes I for one am interested.

I'd be interested in a training session a little farther north than the last (i.e.: North of I90).

Yes indeed. I was thinking if it's only a few of us I could host a night at my place and watch the DVD's and go through some of the booklets that I got. I'm in the Thrashers Corner area of Bothell. If we get a big enough group I can see about a meeting room with a projector screen.

i like that idea Neil, be a little less of a drive for us northern folks to make
Hi All:
I'd be up for that.
Thanks for offering to host a training session at your house Neil.
For the amount of material to cover though, would it be better to have several sessions each focused on a particular topic?
Regards,
Alan

I think there is enough material to break this up into a couple meetings.
I have the handout packets from the DNR training that you could take home with you. I also have DVD's that they recomended at the training. This would not replace taking the DNR training that will hopefully soon be offered again, but this will augment it so we can try to have as much knowledge on the different subjects as possible.
I have a 2 DVD set that is "Handtools for Trail Work" and "Constructing Trail Switchbacks".
I have a DVD "Building Mountain Bike Trails" which may be helpful for Motorcycles Singletrack as well.
I also have a CD that has the "Trail Construction and Maintenance Handbook" as well as I have pocket size copies of this book.
Is there a certain day and time span that would work best for everyone?

Work up a scedule and I think you might get more bites ;)
Hi All:
Neil, how long do you think is necessary for each training session?
If not more than two hours a weeknight evening would be O.K., but for a longer session perhaps like a Sunday afternoon?
Regards,
Alan
