Actually you should explain yourself. It's not about what Kat is going to do it's about what the elected official "PNW4WDA Reigon 1 assistant director" is going to do. Are you not also a official of RTW? A good leader should keep their followers well informed.;)

At the DNR Reiter Foothills Forest Recreation Plan — Public Review Meeting this evening I talked with several of the DNR People present. No don’t ask for names as I am terrible with names, but they were all DNR Employees there to answer questions.

The issue that I raised with them and received the same answer from all:

1. Just how supportative of ORV Recreation on DNR Land was DNR Management.
All responded that DNR recognizes the need for areas to conduct ORV Recreational activities.

2. During the course of the conversations the use of the term “Pilot Program” was explained to me in the following manner.
(a) Reiter Foothills Forest Recreation Plan, which includes ORV area, IS THE PILOT PROGRAM that if successful, will be used as the Pilot Program for opening other areas of DNR Lands for similar use, including ORV Use.
(b) This was the first time I had heard this explanation of the Term, or that DNR would or was considering the opening other areas for ORV Recreation.

3. It was discussed, and DNR is aware that more people needed to become aware of, and understand this DNR position, with regards to Recreation Uses of DNR Managed Lands and how DNR is approaching this issue.

This is not anything that will happen overnight, it may take a decade or more to prove out this Pilot Program at Reiter and we start to see similar plans put into place at other areas. But the quicker we can accomplish the things needed to prove this Pilot Program, the quicker other areas can be considered and actions started.

4. Yes, everything is going to be controlled but funding availability, but what is not in this day and age. But DNR also recognizes the need for additional ORV as well as other Recreational areas with the growth in population and growing popularity of all off road recreation. With that recognition, DNR has also, as you should all know, been looking at funding means to support what they are projecting as future needs.

I am hoping that DNR is also looking at a broader picture then just the Lands they manage when they are looking at use allocations for the various users. Specifically what I am talking about here is the fact that ORV Recreational is a new comer to the Recreational arena, when compared to things like Hiking, Mountain Climbing, and Horse Back Riding.

I know nothing what so ever about trails or areas for Horse Back Riding, except that some exist, so for this discussion I will drop them out of my comments.

Hikers and Mountain Climbers both have many areas within Washington State where there are established Hiking Trails, many of which then lead to Mountain Climbing locations and these are not on DNR Managed Lands. These trails have been developed over many years and encompassed a lot of hard work by the Hiking and Mountain Climbing Communities. And these trails in most cases are accessible for Hiking Use Only, but some I believe also permit Horses.

If you look at the miles of hiking trails per 1000 of population vs. miles of ORV trails you will see a great disparity. ORV use is growing much faster then hiking and provides more income to the local area business around an ORV Trail area then hikers do around hiking trails.

So I am asking DNR to not just look at the lands they manage when looking for a equal measurement of each type of recreational use

Also to show our support of DNR and their recreational plans, we need to step up to the plate and help police our users much better then has been done in the past and is being done in the present. And this means all ORV Users; stop being Bike Guys, 4x4 Guys, Quad Guys and work together as responsible ORV Guys!

If you don’t like the rules, then step up to the plate and work to change them to something you do like, don’t say, “Screw the Rules” and doing as you dam well please. Obey the rules and make those you ride with or encounter on the trails do the same. If the rule is wrong, then work to correct it and if it is right, accept it and move on even if it imposes restrictions on your activities, be a responsible ORV User!

Yeah, I know some of you (maybe most of you) have heard all of this before, but even so it will not hurt you to hear it again, as a lot of people have not been paying attention and doing the things they know are right and stopping themselves or others from doing the things they know are wrong. Now I am off the soapbox (for now!).
